- Gender Sterotypes -

I truly believe that there are gender stereo types today. Over the years there has been countless offenses towards women and their driving skills. No one knows there the rumors began, nor do women know why they are still being told they are horrible drivers. Some people might be thinking that because the make is a stronger being and rule the house that they would be the ones to drive. Which would cause the male to become a better driver.
Today, "woman's driving" is more like a joke than an insult, however it can still be taken as very offensive and rude. Scientific studies show that women are in fact safer drivers because we are more aware of our surroundings. Perhaps the jokes started because men drive more because of work....but that doesn't make woman's driving worse.
Another common stereotype that is around these days it that women are cleaner then men. This I believe to be a major stereo type men can be as clean as women, but they make it seem like they don't care as much as women. Women are just thought to be cleaner because we dress up and do our make up, this is only because the women want to impress the men. Men are sought out to be lazy stoners, it may seem like they are because they may think its uncool and not worth the effort.
Stereotyping has become more of an issue now a days and has changed in the past 30 years.

does gender matter

Every women should have the same rights as any man. However, gender does matter, because we are all physically different. Men are built to be stronger.

"Yeah, I mean I cut wood because I like to and I'm stronger. My wife cooks because she likes to, and she's better at it. But that doesn't mean I don't cook and she doesn't cut wood."
- Mr. Lavender

Obviously, Women and men are different in many ways. Through out history women have always been in the "barefoot and pregnant" shadow, which basically means that women stay home and take care of kids while men go out and work. These days, Women play an almost eqaul roll in the workplace (women earn 75cents and men earn $1 for doing the same job.)

gender

Gender play a role in every persons life. For men it is different, the stereotype is that they are strong and powerful, where as women have the stereotype as they can not even compete with a man in anyway. that is completely not true! I know women that are stronger and faster than some guys. Women are just as capable as men, and this plays a role in my life. Being a female there are supposedly limitations. Whether i am playing hockey or driving a car there is a stereotype. Girls cant check...that is demeaning for women saying we cant handle a little physical contact, but we have girls on our team that play with the boys in their league as well as ours. Driving, is another concept that really frustrates me. i am 100 percent positive i am a better driver than most guys, and i know a lot of women are better than the guys i know driving. But at the same time when we have all these limitations and stereotypes it is super fun to go around and do something that is a "manly" thing and do it better than a guy. As far as opportunities go there aren't that many things that only women can do and men cant, which isn't that big of a deal for me. But limitations, again there aren't many. School wise there is no difference, at home there are some things that are different. when my dad goes out shooting with his friends he takes my brother and never invites me, but if he goes alone he always takes me, i dont really get that. Gender doesn't necessarily play a part in my life, stereotypes are the problem. The fact that people think men are stronger, more powerful, and more capable is bull!!! Because if women wanted to do anything they are more than capable!

Gender Stereotypes

Gender stereotypes have not been particularly relevant in my life thus far, but I realize they do exist. Yesterday, Iris, Riley and I discussed some typical gender stereotypes. We noticed that often times, males are considered inconsiderate. They can sometimes lack manners, hygiene, motivation and consideration towards women. Chivalry isn’t dead and it should never die. Even though women have risen as strong independent power holders, men should still show respect to them by being gentlemen. Also, it is obvious that men have not realized that women are rising in power. Women of any race can hold commanding positions, whether it is in the armed forces, politics, or economics. Men still make jokes about how a woman’s place is at home, or better yet, in the kitchen, when it is a fact that more women today are having jobs outside of them home leaving the men are taking over some household duties. Another point that we noticed that bothered all of us a little more personally is that if a guy dates multiple girls, they are considered cool “players”. But if a woman were to do that, everyone would consider her activity to be promiscuous. These are just a few of the gender stereotypes that I believe will always exist in some ways, just because of the general differences between the sexes.

Stereotypes: a standardized conception about something. Stereotypes do not just appear, but they are not imaginary or even false. They have roots, deep roots that are born from something and grow into something much larger. The generalization can be positive or negative, offensive or not. Take Telluride, a small town in southwestern Colorado where everyone is assumed to be rich. When a citizen in Telluride hears this statement, it sounds absurd. Yet Telluride is undeniably an expensive place to live, and therefore people who live here must be “rich.”
Gender stereotypes are the worst: Women cannot drive for shit; Men are slobs; Women are weak; Men are more athletic; Women talk too much; Men lack emotions; Women are always moody; Men are “players;” this list is endless.
Dating is almost impossible these days. When I think of dating and gender stereotypes, the movie “Clueless” comes to mind. It exaggerates the roles of boys and girls in a high school atmosphere, yet nothing about Cher’s opinion is wrong. Guys stereotypically are “druggies, slackers, and slobs.” They wear their jeans sagged below their thighs with their boxers exposed for all to see. Their hair is greasy and it’s actually cool to smell. They are not held to the same standards as women, and therefore they do not strive to achieve straight A’s in school, for example. Girls, in contradiction, care about their schoolwork and appearance to a much higher extent. They wake up in the morning at least an hour before they need to leave their house, mainly because women stereotypically take hours to get ready. It’s not a bad thing; women just take more pride in their appearance. They put on makeup and a take time to pick out an ensemble that matches. And then they arrive at school, or work, and their male counterparts look as if they rolled out of bed five minutes ago. With women becoming more independent and smart, and looking much more polished, you can see why dating is out of the question.
According to these stereotypes, women are expected to become a stay home mother and bear perfect children to her hard working husband. Each day when he comes home from a long day at the office, she will have a perfectly crafted meal waiting for him. The house will be spotless and she will be expected to wait on him, hand and foot, because he had been working hard all day. The woman will be polished from head to toe; her hair is styled and her clothes are ironed, she smells fresh from the shower and a genuine smile is glued to her face. The mother always puts others before her self, acting on virtues such as love, compassion, care, nurturing, and sympathy. On the other hand, the man’s stereotypical role is the financial provider. He focuses hard on his career so that his wife will have all she desires. It is always his job to initiate the dates and anything semi romantic. However, this stereotypical family rarely exists in modern society. The women are actually equal companions to their partners, if not superior. Women hold equal jobs and many earn higher incomes than their husbands. More women graduate from college than men and women generally have higher GPAs.

That’s enough for now…

Dating Rituals of the Present Day

Before I begin, I would like to start off by saying this blog is not directed to anyone specifically in our class and do not take offense.
I strongly believe that, while many gender issues have been mended over time, one has grown exponentially out of control.  This issue is that of dating protocols.  In the 20th century, when men or boys wanted to ask a girl out, they were kind, respectful.  Their methods were that of courting a woman, winning her affection and then holding on to it long enough to sweetly ask her out.  It almost seemed that of a competition, one where guys would see how much they could shower their women with love and kindness, how long they could wait for her to be comfortable enough to kiss them.
Dating rituals of our modern day are extremely shameful to those of the past.  I would like to explain the dating rituals of today to show you how they undermine the woman and put extreme power in the hand of the male.  The protocols of today start with number one: making out with a girl without asking her permission and/or dating her to begin with.  This first step most always consists of more than a demure peck that a father would surely approve of, but rather a sex-thirsty, tongue-filled, tonsil-hockey game to see how far the man can push the woman.  I’ll now kindly give you males that benefit of the doubt by saying sometimes number one is initiated by the woman herself, but mostly it is initiated by her male counterpart, that of someone who knows he is in control of her every move.
Number two of this new protocol usually consists of some internet action.  Maybe the male will change his facebook relationship status to: “In a Relationship” or “It’s complicated”.  Chances are, after this, he’ll look at his lady’s profile and add a couple of comments on her pictures that will consist of something close to, “Damn, your ( usually with the wrongly used your/you’re, by the way) hot” or (excuse my language) “Look at that rack!”  This will probably cheer up the girl for the time being, but let me tell you something, a girl is more than what’s just on her outside, and although we like compliments on how we look, I am sure many girls would agree with me when I say we prefer beautiful, gorgeous, and pretty as opposed to “hot” which just makes us sound like a sex symbol.
Number three is a step in which I will briefly explain with two words: home-run.  You all, I am sure know that means and it needs no further explanation.
Although some select few couples do not use this protocol, I believe many do, and after number three, many of the couple which use the above protocol will end up apart.  Why is this you ask? Well, let me tell you, because the boy got what he wanted, and because he knows he can do the same thing to other women, he moves straight on.  The woman is then disposed of, left used, abused, and feeling like a piece of road kill in the middle of a highway that no one bothers to pick up.
There you have it, women are seen as objects to conquer and then move on from these days, as is shown by our modern rules of dating.  Ladies, do not feel ashamed by this essay, you will, one day, find someone who has finally figured themselves out and wants to have a real relationship, but for now, I advise you to stop massaging men’s filthy egos and to quit feeding this sick cycle.  And for men who are not egotistical and sex-hungry, I am sorry if I have insulted you.  Way to be a good guy and treat a lady right, you deserve the very best.
The end.

Origin of stereotypes/views that create them-Davis

Stereotypes in today's society are community and "click" driven; infused in the brains of followers and people of like interests. People of similar interests group together, and usually form opinion based generalizations of others which create what is called a stereotype. Men do this because the majority of men have similar interests, women also do this where as they, for the most part enjoy sharing similar interests. The groups that produce these stereotypes get even narrower than just gender groups, such as sports teams, people of different ages, people of different races, people of different residential location. All of these groups produce stereotypes for both men and women that are viewed by all of these groups and more, through school, work, and society in general.
These same stereotypes are also very much driven by thoughts of superiority over the opposite sex. Although a stereotype may be seen by the opposite sex as extremely "sexist" or "gender biased", it could possibly be a somewhat factual statement about the male or female sex. This is the sort of thing the evokes a sort of "battle of the sexes" where men are heard "bad-mouthing" women, similarly where women are "bad-mouthing" men. I feel that it all is egotistically driven, to a point. It is an action of placing yourself, or your sex above your human race counterpart.
Gender issues have just as well grown and died throughout history due to civil rights movements, the passing of certain gender rights related legislature, and the ever evolving societies all around the world, driven by participation of both the male and female sexes in one way or another. This is the root, I believe, of all gender related stereotypes that float up and downstream, from mouth to mouth, from man to man, and from woman to woman.
