Dannie Darko
Dannie Darko could or couldn’t be considered existentialist depending on how you look at it. It could be existentialist because Dannie decided what he was going to do all the way through the film. When he first met Frank he chose to get out of bed and follow the voice out side. Every time Dannie did what Frank said to do he chose to fallow Frank. At the end Dannie chose to kill Frank and to stay in bed and die from the jet. You could also say that it isn’t existentialist because Frank telling Dannie what to do Dannie had no choice. The only thing that Dannie decided was at the end to die. There are different ways of looking at it and what you think depends on what you believe. If you believe that you always have a choice even if some els is influencing you or not then Dannie Darko is existentialist. if you don’t believe you always have a choice then it wouldn’t be existentialist.

hehheh haey sarah, i think his name is DONNIE you silly girl.
ReplyDeleteanyways...
I think you could also add a few things like how Donnie begins to think "why am i here?" "what am i doing this for?" (existentialist themes that are brought out in both the book and the film.)
also on the con side maybe you could add that he didnt have any control over his actions, because he was constantly following his pre determind (by Frank) fate.
