Donnie Darko and The Plague
For this I am thinking of writing about the way in which Donnie Darko and the Plague are related in the respect that both have quite a sense impending doom and destruction. The main difference is that in The Plague, the entire community of Oran faces the disease and has to deal with the looming sense of doom whereas in Donnie Darko, it is only Donnie that knows that he has to dieor the world will end. I think contrasting these two things could be interesting. The topic of choice in these two stories is also interesting in that they both are defined by lack of choice. In The Plague, Oran is quarantined and the people do not the choice to leave. In Donnie Darko, Donnie is stuck in the predicament he is in not because he chooses it, but it just happens, and in the end, the fate of the the universe is defined by choice.

I totally agree trevor! i actually pretty much wrote about the same exact thing. but yeah Donnie is the only one that goes through destruction, and then in the book the whole population of the town goes through the destruction.
ReplyDeleteI think this will also be an interesting idea. You could also maybe talk about who is influenced, In the Plague it is a whole city and in Donnie Darko it is only related around his family? If he can travel through time, shouldnt it effect the whole world? shouldn't there be other factors in deciding the final time travel period? maybe just an idea... love you ging!
ReplyDeleteYeah....having it as just the one person rather than a whole community does certainly change things when it seems that death is drawing nearer. I feel like it's the key though, how you say that in the end, the fate of the universe is defined by choice. That's kinda what I'm getting out of the existentialism theory.
ReplyDeleteIn concurrence to your ideas, I agree that its unfortunate that Donnie is left with no choice but to die. It's either him, or everyone. He must sacrifice himself in order to save the world. I wonder how the choices amongst the plague will lessen or people will begin to escape.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a good idea, I'm sure you will be able to write a strong paper on this. Like Dana said you should definitely work off what you said about how the fate of the universe is defined by choice.
