Driving Stereotype

There is a common stereotype that women are bad drivers. In a controversial study that took place at John Hopkins teen girls are more likely to get in car crashes than teen boys. Epidemiology stated, "American women were involved in 5.7 crashes per million miles driven. Men, on the other hand, clocked up just 5.1 crashes per million miles. Given the fact that men drive an estimated 74 percent more miles per year than women, the figure is surprising indeed." I think the stereotype should be women are not as good drivers as men. This is better than women are bad drivers, because not all women are bad drivers just a good majority of them are. For example, a nice lady driving an E-car almost rear ended me in the parking lot the other day going an astonishing top speed of 15 miles per hour while texting. Girls are also not the best at operating machinery, which is okay but they should be more aware of their surroundings when driving a vehicle. I just feel like some girls don't take driving seriously, which ends up in crashes and many near crashes. Another example would be a game that some girls at this school told me, "when you go over a cattle guard everyone in the car has to put their hands in the air including the driver. If you don't then you have to take a piece of clothing off." I found two things wrong with this game. One, the driver should always have two hands on the wheel especially when other people are in the car. Two, taking your clothes off while driving is dangerous for you, and people that are driving by and become distracted. Driving is not a game! unless your a race-car driver.

  1. I like how you quoted other people to get your point across. Might want to make the fonts the same! Don't guys play "driving games" also? But yes that does make driving dangerous. Your points are original which is good!

  2. I like this. I mean, I don't know if I necessarily agree, but you backed up your argument with statistics. I do agree that many women think they can multi-task and drive (i.e. put on makeup, text, even read!) But guys like to drink and drive, I may inform you. Anyhow, it's good! I like it. Especially about the lady driving the ecar, that part was good.

  3. great statistics to back up your argument, but even the change of the stereotype is not necessarily true. Guys ge distracted while driving, i have seen guys text as well, yes there is the whole make up and what not that women do but some men are terrible drivers, i think is more how someone was taught to drive not based on gender. but good stuff and good examples

  4. Austin,

Ah, don't you love the internet (and the instant statistics it provides)? One wonders how significant a difference .6 is on a 100 point scale; still, I like your effort to refine the stereotype through concrete support.
