Gender stereotypes is an issue we all face everyday, granted some more than others. With these stereotypes comes obstacles, unnecessary obstacles we have to overcome to be successful in all aspects of our lives. Could be sports, school, insecurities, or relationships with your peers. Common stereotypes for girls that I see most prevalent, are our abilities to compete, and go far with sports and our athleticism. In our groups yesterday, we couldn't come up with alto of stereotypes that affected us as girls on regular basis, but they are still there, girls belong in the kitchen, cooking, and cleaning or they are insane and mean when that time of the month comes around. These are all based off of certain circumstances or clips we've seen in movies, and we find ourselves targeting these circumstances to every female in the humane race. Is that accurate? No, certainly not. For men we came up with a few. Men want sex, men are violent, men are unhygienic, and the list goes on. I believe the source of these stereotypes comes a lot from our society. and the media. We see the way girls should look in a magazine and the men should look, and trick ourselves into believing that s how we should look, to be accepted into our society as someone with worth. I personally don't have to face many female stereotypes everyday, but one I am familiar with is that girls can't play basketball, or snowboard. Basketball has been my life for seven years, and snowboarding for ten. When I tell guys I snowboard immediately they think I suck, same goes for basketball. Doesn't matter that I was on Varsity for three years, or that I went to Nationals and competed in slope style or boarder cross. I suck because I'm a girl. I still love both sports and they make me happy, and are a space for me to get all of my aggression and competetive drives out. Just because at first I may be judged just on the fact that I'm girl, it's all the more rewarding when you can overcome that and show the crowd what you've got.
My gender definitely defines a big part of my identity. Not completely though, I snowboard, jump off 50 foot cliffs, wear car harts, eat a lot, and list of "boy things" goes on. Along with that comes the lip gloss, chick flicks, shopping and horses .I get the best of both worlds! I don't let my gender limit me in anyway, I overcome what little obstacles may cover my path, but in our modern day society those stereotypes arn't the end of the world by any means. We still have opportunities to be very successful and independent.
Gender definitely matters. Most men are better at manual labor than women and women are gentle when it comes to traking care of babies, it's just evolution and instinct. One thing we all have to be carful of not making any one gender more imortant than the other. We need each other to keep our race here on earth. We go together. Issues with gender have come along way and each year I feel like progress is being made.
"Evolution and instinct." An interesting post, Riley. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
