Marriage is a union that is meant for procreation; a man and a woman coming together to create a new life. People of the same sex can't procreate so there is no sense in them being married to one another. In a family, children need both a nurturing mother and a supportive father to create a wholesome atmosphere. Without both, the child lacks the advice and parenting traditions that would later help them succeed in life. If a child has same sex parents, they are also more likely to engage in homosexual behavior because that is how they were raised.
^This is a rough idea of some of the points that I will hit in my essay against gay marriage, even though everyone should love whoever they want and have the right to a legal union and committed relationship :)
Well I am like you and agree with gay marriage, so this essay will be pretty interesting to write. But the ideas that you bring up are some of the only legitimate arguments for the topic. As I said in another post you might want to consider how the opposition, "pro gay marriage", will counter your arguments and what some of their arguments will be. You may want to address how prohibiting marriage would benefit the state, and go more in depth in how allowing gay marriage could damage what marriage has stood for. I like what you have so far, the only thing I would recommend is that you look at some pro marriage arguments and figure out how to counter them. Good job
ReplyDeleteYour ideas are good, but I personally would focus more on the procreation side than the religious side. Another argument you could use is that married gay couples would receive benefits that would come from US tax dollars. A strong argument for pro gay marriage would be everyones protected right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. You could rebut this by saying that if gay marriage was legal, people could claim that their own pursuit of happiness was an extreme activity.
ReplyDeleteOlivia,
ReplyDeleteThis is a good start (I particularly like the 'slippery slope' approach). I know that you've been assigned the 'wrong' side, but this can be a valuable exercise in argumentation. Simply take all the points you would normally make in favor of same-sex marriage and then try to flip them on their head. Also, don't over look the source material for support (and for points to argue against).
Thank you for the feedback everyone, great advice!
