Same Sex Marriage Is a NoNo

In this disscussion I am taking the libertarian side of this argument. I believe that the state and country should not be involved in marriage at all. Marriage is a religious ceremony to certify a life long partnership. So marriage should not be involved in this religious ceremony at all. To keep church and state separated the government should have nothing to do with the whole celebration. Also, since marriage is a religious action, then according to the bible it should only between a man and a woman. Under god, this event is only supposed to be about two members of the opposite sex.

  1. I agree that the argument that you are using is one of the few viable arguments for this topic. Looking at gay marriage from this standpoint greatly strengthens your biblical arguments, but one thing that you might want to consider is that if marriage is such a religious ceremony and is so holy, etc... Why can people divorce? The bible clearly states that divorce is wrong but people break that rule. Why is marriage different?

Otherwise I think that the case you present is pretty good, you just might want to get a few more examples to expand your paper.

  2. Then why can atheist people get get married? Marriage isn't a religious ordinance, at least not anymore, and should not be regulated by religious doctrine. EQUAL PROTECTION CLAUSE.

  3. Hmmm...

I actually like the separation argument; of course, you'd have to make the contemporaneous argument that the state should withdraw the benefits it currently awards to heterosexual couples who are married (whether in a religious ceremony or not).

  4. I think that what Nathan said is correct. Marriage isn't completely religious anymore. That could strengthen your argument if you say that it should be. I think you also need to address why the benefits that the state gets from heterosexual marriage should be taken away.
