BOYS VS. GIRLS

There is many distinctions between a male and a female not just physically but many stereotypes that are set to each gender. Blue is a color set to guys while pink is a color set to many girls. This is a stereotype from the instant we are born, we are given a color to live by. Being a female I was designated with the quote on quote “girly color pink.” From a young age society sets up toys for both boys and little girls. It is a hard question of if it is innate for boys to want to play with machinery or girls to play with dolls or if society instills this in us from a super young age.

As we grow even more stereotypes are made. Men for centuries have been thought to be the “provider,” the main money producer and the strongest protector of a family unit. Women have forever also been seen as a sex symbol, a care taker and a nurturer. Women are meant to please and to impress while men stereotypically go around with an “I don’t care,” attitude.

Nowadays this on on a change, especially in our high school I think this is prevelant. On average the girls in our grade are much more successful than the guys. This is a large generalization because we have many more females than men in our grade but from a day to day basis and what our (female) general stereotypes are based off what we see and hear. The guys today are much lazier and exposed and enthralled in the lifestyle of recreational drug use. This is not to say woman are not as well but especially with soft drugs like that of marijuana men are definitely more involved. It gives off the idea that individuals who use it often do not care about their life and what they do on a day to day basis and that they can not find sufficient happiness in life itself but only in the recreational use of drugs. Men are simply less determined in what they do and how they structure their lifestyle. Proof is shown when the amount of woman going to college is higher than men for the first time ever and more and more woman are replacing men at higher ranked jobs.

Things that are generally specified as stereotypical are often times not. For instance the fact that on average men are stronger than woman is true. They are built differently and have a more intensive muscle mass than woman do, they are also not built to be able to carry a baby for nine months.

Other ideas are wide ranged that woman are more likely to be clean and well-kept and judged upon what they wear and how they present themselves. While men love to brag and always base themselves off of their muscle mass or what new trick they can do.

Both men and women have their place in society and the things they have to do. However men will and are being taken over by woman. Which will be a huge drastic social change because the root word of WOMAN is MAN....

  1. Yeah, I totally get what you're saying. It's kinda like a long time ago men ruled everything but coming in the future women can rule everything. It will definitely be a weird change.

  2. I really like your reference to the colors that we are given when we are born. It is so true. From the very moment that we begin our lives we already are labeled, the stereotypes have already been fostered. However I disagree with your comment on the laziness and general attitudes of boys. In Telluride there is such a small pool of people to observe, in no way are we a typical town; we live in a bubble. Maybe in Telluride this is a common stereotype, however I can name just as many girls that have the same actions you described above. Good Job!!

  3. I really like the color stereotype, it is not one that we usually think about, but is a huge part of society. How can you just put a color or a toy with a gender? Even though it seems so innocent, this action could be the start of gender stereotype.

  4. I agree with this for the most part, but I don't agree that men are being overtaken by women. We all know that women are exceeding more than they used to, but i'm not sure if they are going to overtake men. Men and women will probably center out and it will be even.

  5. Jo,

Nice post. I like your effort to distinguish between those stereotypes that have some basis in reality, and those that don't. Why is it, do you suppose, that the latter types still persist?
