Gender Stereotypes
I don't think that gender should be taken into account by people and it shouldn't affect people beyond their personal lives. As much as any discrimination or generalization, I think those based on gender are the hardest to defend and are even more arbitrary than even those based on race or religion. The classic picture of the diligent stay at home mom and submissive wife popularized by the media are contradicted and opposed by the majority of women, the same going for men usually not fitting the illustration of an unintelligent, beer swilling, sex obsessed brute. Where as this may not have been the case 25 years ago, as we move forward we have realized we shouldn't mold ourselves to fit what society expects of us. Yes, there are people who really are the stay at home mom type at heart, but we shouldn't expect all women to be as such. There are women fighting in the military and men who design clothes, and that is perfectly acceptable. We should teach people to follow their talents and passions, regardless of if the gender they belong to usually doesn't follow that path.

good job i felt like this took a unique view on gender stereotypes and how to avoid them.
ReplyDeleteYou pretty much covered everything I was thinking, good point with women soldiers and men clothing designers
ReplyDelete"25 years ago"? Try 50. You have a good point that stereotypes tend to be tenacious and can persist long after they have any root in reality. Why do you suppose this is?
ReplyDeleteGood post.
