Truthfully, I struggled a bit trying to figure out what I was going to write my essay about, but in the end, I think I came up with a legit idea. As some of you may know, I enjoy writing stories, and even finished my own book. I feel this has a bit of originality to it, and I even came up with how it built me as a person.
If you have ever written a character, you know you need to be familiar with quite a bit about people to make sure that the person seems realistic. But this can go both ways. As I built the characters of my book, it gave me a look into how people work. Putting together a character’s past to make them a certain way helped me not only make the characters people who you seem to know and care about, but helped me see why people in my own life act the way they do. By turning a person’s life into a story, you can easily break down their own development and see links between things they have lived through or things they are still dealing with and their own demeanor. This also assists you in giving an insight into someone’s head, helping you understand their actions.
My plan is to write my essay, first exploring my experience writing a book, and then going into how it helped me start to understand the people around me better.

ReplyDeleteI like this idea alot i think your right not too many people have written a book in there life. i think you should be very specific, take passages out of the book that youve writen, this will allow colleges to really understand what you are talking about
ReplyDeleteOH MY GOD! Dana this is going to be one of the most bad ass college essays ever. I think like Shannon said you need to gt specific about it. Talk about how hard, but necessary, it was to give some characters the path they end up on (Najee) Or how you put pieces of yourself into the different characters? (domino maybe?) I simply can't wait to finish the final draft of the book AND read this essay!
ReplyDeleteDana,
ReplyDeleteI share the enthusiasm of the posters above (those I can understand, at least), but writing about writing can be tricky (and, yes, very successful when done right). I look forward to seeing your first draft and going over it with you. Are you going to use some of the language from your novel and cookbook to provide the sort of 'trigger' that others will find in more narrative structures? Might be an idea worth trying.
